Protect Yourself and Loved Ones from Elder Financial Scams

Older adults are often targeted by scammers because they tend to have more financial resources than younger individuals. At Carver Bank, we are committed to helping protect our senior customers from fraud and financial abuse.

With World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) coming up on June 15, it’s the perfect time to share important tips with seniors and their families to help guard against scams and exploitation.

At Carver Bank, we take a proactive stance against elder fraud. Our team receives ongoing training, and we use advanced tools to identify suspicious activity.

We urge everyone to be cautious and stay informed about common scams like these:

Healthcare and Medicare Fraud

Scammers often pose as Medicare representatives or medical suppliers, offering fake services or equipment to steal personal information.

  • Never share personal or banking information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Phishing Scams and Online Fraud

Cybercriminals have registered countless fake websites and send emails, texts, or social media messages that look like they’re from trusted sources—often including logos of banks, online retailers, or video conferencing platforms like Zoom.

Clicking on these fake links can install malware and compromise your personal information.
Tip: If something seems off, don’t click—contact the company directly using a verified phone number or website.

Phone and Telemarketing Scams

Politeness shouldn’t come at the cost of safety. It’s okay to hang up on suspicious calls. Scammers often exploit kindness with tactics like:

  • “Pigeon drop” schemes – promising a shared reward in exchange for a “good faith” payment.

  • Fake emergency calls – pretending a relative is in trouble and urgently needs money.

  • Bogus charity requests – asking for donations to made-up causes or illegitimate organizations.

Remember: Always verify before giving. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts.
